Looking for the best sheets to complete your bedding setup? You're in the right place. We should all know by now that a good night's sleep is essential for your mental and physical health. For many of us, that means spending a little extra on the best mattress, the best duvet and the best pillow. So, why spoil things by settling for sub-standard sheets?

Just think back to the last time you stayed at a fancy hotel and slid into a bed fitted with gorgeously silky soft sheets. Wasn't that the best feeling? Why not bring that experience home by going the extra distance with your choice of bed sheets? While the best sheets are rarely the cheapest, when you think about how much time you're going to be spending in them, paying extra for premium sheets really doesn't seem that big of a deal (our guide does include some cheap and cheerful options for those on a tighter budget, too).

To save you lots of searching, we've gathered together a selection of the best sheets available at the moment, made from various materials (see our cotton vs bamboo vs linen sheets comparison if you're undecided) and at a range of price points. We'll also suggest which ones will probably suit you best, as well as which options are the most environmentally friendly.

Ready to upgrade your bedding? Read on to see our pick of the best sheets on the market right now.

What's the best thread count for sheets?

The short answer is that 180 and up is acceptable, 400-800 is considered very high quality. Above 800, and it's probably marketing BS. Typically, the higher the thread count, the softer the sheets, but it's a bit more complicated than that – for a full explanation head to our 'What's the best thread count for bed sheets?' article.

If you're looking for the best cotton sheets, head straight to Hampton & Astley. This UK-based brand makes a select range of top quality Egyptian Cotton Sateen bedding. We've tested out Hampton & Astley's sheets and found them buttery soft, super smooth and absurdly comfortable to sleep in.  They also regulate temperature well, so you won't wake up sweaty. They come with a 30-day trial and 1-year guarantee. At full price, these bed sheets aren't cheap, but this is one of those brands that regularly offers hefty discounts (in fact, we'd venture to say they're never really sold at RRP). The range is perhaps a little limited – there's no single size, and only three colour options – but if that doesn't bother you, these are an excellent buy.

Simba makes our favourite mattress – the Simba Hybrid Pro – and it turns out it's also very good at bedding. If it's a brilliant basic sheet you're after, the Performance Fitted sheet would make a great choice. It's available in 200 thread count percale weave or 400 thread count Egyptian cotton. We've tried both, and while the former is perfectly acceptable, the latter is noticeably better quality, if you can afford it. The Egyptian cotton is silky smooth and soft, as well as being naturally temperature regulating. An elasticated hem keeps everything securely in place, and it'll fit up to a 40cm deep mattress (that's really deep, FYI). Flat sheet lovers will need to shop elsewhere, though.

Before you buy, make sure you aren't missing a discount – our Simba mattress sales and deals page has info on all the best offers, and we also have a Simba discount codes page.

Slight sheen won't appeal to everyone

Dip & Doze makes bedding with an interesting USP here: for each shade, you can pick between soft and smooth (sateen) or cool and crisp (percale). We've been testing the former, and can confirm it is indeed delightfully soft and smooth, and feels luxuriously high quality, too. That luxury follows through to the detailing: the buttons are tucked neatly out of sight behind a double fold of fabric, although we wouldn't be mad if they did end up on show, because they're very cute little wooden buttons engraved with the brand's name.

The duvet set colours are classy and there's a wide selection to choose from – we're not huge fans of the slight sheen on the sateen version, but it might be right up your street. The cotton is certified organic and fairtrade, and the duvets have size labels sewn in that'll come in handy if you have a few different sizes of bed in your home.

You might not have considered brushed cotton for your sheets, but if you want something to snuggle up in on chilly nights, Eve's brushed cotton bed linen is perfect. We've been testing out a sheet and duvet set, and the duvet in particular is a firm favourite already. It's absurdly soft and comforting – the kind of soft that genuinely makes our tester happy when they wake up in the morning. The down-side of this kind of bedding is that it does start to pill quite quickly; our tester found this an issue with the sheets, but not so much with the duvet cover.

With brushed cotton, you don't get the chill you have with regular cotton sheets when you first get into bed, and they stay a comfortable level of warmth all night – although we'd definitely reach for these in winter than summer. While you don't get the same crisp, hotel-y feel of freshly laundered cotton sheets, these look and feel high quality, and they don't crease easily, either.

Note: As of October 2022, Eve Sleep has gone into administration, so mattresses, sheets and other sleep products from Eve will no longer be available in the near future. However, third party retailers like Amazon may still have Eve products for sale, so it's best to look there for any Eve sleep deals.

Bamboo is touted as the big thing in bedding. It can be much more sustainable than cotton, as well as being naturally temperature regulating and hypoallergenic. If you're interested in giving bamboo a go, head to Panda. This brand makes some of our favourite bedding, and its bamboo sheets are as high quality as we'd expect. They're available in a wide range of colours, and the duvet covers have cool bamboo button detailing.

The feel of this fabric is soft, smooth and silky – Panda says the 320 thread-count in this material is equivalent to a 1,200 thread-count cotton. It's much less stiff than cotton, which means things can get a bit bunched up if you're a wriggly sleeper (there are ties inside the duvet cover to try and counteract this), and be aware that it creases much quicker than cotton, too.

With an impressive 400 thread-count, these sheets are crafted with a luxurious sateen weave that makes them both durable and super-soft. And they're made from 100% Eucalyptus Lyocell, a form of rayon that, unlike viscose, does not use carbon disulfide, which is toxic to workers and the environment. That means these sheets are free from static and devoid of harmful chemicals, as attested to by their FKT and OEKO-TEX certifications. Eucalyptus Lyocell is also naturally temperature balancing, making this a good choice for hot sleepers.

They're nice and practical in use, too. The corners of the fitted sheets easily fit mattresses between 12 and 20-inches thick, and the flat sheets are four inches longer than the industry average – although note that currently they're US sizes only. Yes, they're not the cheapest on the market, and they must be washed in cold water. The SoftStretch sheets are available in a wide range of attractive colours, including white, off-white, greys and (of course) purples. Purple says they're soft yet strong, will wash well, and are breathable and moisture wicking too. We haven't tried these out, but the existing reviews are enthusiastic.

Bamboo is truly the fabric of the future. It's not only soft, silky and luxurious, but also environmentally responsible. That's because bamboo requires little water and grows very quickly, so one area can yield 10 times the equivalent amount of bamboo compared to cotton. That said, many products labelled bamboo are actually a mix of fibres. These Pure Bamboo sheets, though, are the real deal, crafted from 100% organic bamboo viscose, and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Certified.

Made from 300 thread count, sateen weave fabric, they provide a soft, smooth and silky feel. The fabric is also naturally thermo-regulating and moisture wicking, helping keep you cool and relaxed on hot nights. The envelope-style pillowcases in this set come with overlapping closure to stop your pillows slipping out. And the fitted sheet has an elasticated border and fits any mattress up to 16 inches thick.

If you're living in a hot climate, or just a tendency to run hot a night, the best bed sheets for you might be this cooling bamboo set from Hotel Sheets Direct. Made from 100% bamboo viscose, they're thermo-regulating, helping you stay cool all night long, as well as being moisture wicking to prevent sweat. More generally, bamboo mimics the feeling of satin on your skin and is perfect for summer and spring nights with an airy breeze. These sheets are fitted with all around elastic (not just the corners), and the pockets  fit around mattress up to 15 inches deep. They can be washed in cool to warm water with a gentle liquid detergent; dried on a low to medium heat.
